Text books and beyond
Children are encouraged to engage with the lessons in the text book, and relate the stories to their own experiences and contexts. They respond to open questions and explore themes from the text. These practices encourage children to be more engaged at school and bring a freshness and originality to their work in school.
Discovering knowledge of neighborhood crafts
Children discover the knowledge of neighborhood craft persons and artisans such as sculptors, weavers, tailors, cobblers, printers, potters and mechanics. They learn from them and establish a rapport and respect for them.
Circulating creative works
The interactions with children at this age contribute to collective creative works, or lead to individual texts that are like story seeds. The materials are reintroduced to be seen and read by the children and circulated beyond to their families, the locality and the school.
